How do I find available internships?
CECS have very strong relationships with a number of high-profile government and industry-based employers who are interested in offering internship placements to ANU students on an annual basis. In addition to these established relationships, CECS are also actively negotiating with new partners to accept more of our students for prestigious internship opportunities. CECS advertise all opportunities for students as they come up – both on this website and via email.

Are Internships Paid?
While ANU strongly recommend that Industry Partners pay interns at least a minimum wage for their placement, some internships (namely those with not-for-profit organisations) may not be paid. If you’re interested in applying for an internship, it’s important that you clarify whether or not it’s a paid position before you take the time to apply, as there may be Centrelink benefit or International Student Visa implications for accepting what is essentially a full time, paid position.

Can I get academic credit for my internship?
If you are undertaking an internship that is endorsed by CECS, you will be eligible to receive up to 24 units of credit towards your academic program by enrolling in ENGN3200 or COMP3820 (depending on your program). For Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) students, an engineering internship can take the place of elective courses. For Bachelor of Engineering (R&D) (Honours) students, an engineering internship can take the place of electives, R&D projects, or a combination of both. It is your responsibility to determine how much space you have in your program to fit an internship for credit prior to accepting an internship position. When is a good time to start looking for an internship?
It’s ideal if you start looking at advertised internship positions from your first year of university – not to apply, but to get an idea for the type of skills and experience our government and industry partners are looking for in their interns – that way, you can get a head start on developing your professional competencies so when you apply for an internship (anytime from Third Year onwards), you will have a highly competitive application.

What skills or experience do I need to secure an internship?
Typically, to be considered for an internship, you will need a minimum of a High-Credit average and to have completed at least 2 years (96 units) of your academic program. In terms of the technical skills and experience required to be successful in winning an internship position, this will be determined by the specific employer who is hosting the internship; however, there are a number of other highly desirable attributes for any work environment that you may be required to demonstrate in your Internship applications:
- Aptitude and interest in the field – i.e. co-curricular and extra-curricular activities you’ve engaged with that relate directly to the field of the internship.
- Ability to work as a member of a team
- Interpersonal and Communication skills
- Flexibility/Adaptability and organisational skills
- Analytical/Research Skills
- Problem-Solving/Reasoning/Creativity

Can I source my own internship?
You can source your own internship and – assuming it meets the specified requirements – count it towards your 420 hours of required Work Experience (ENGN3100, COMP4800 or COMP3560); however, if your intention is to receive academic credit for your internship placement, you cannot source your own internship. Working together, CECS, the employer and you also need to develop and sign an appropriate contact which stipulates the terms and conditions of your placement so all parties’ needs and requirements are satisfied. This process often requires significant negotiation and time, which means that one-off agreements cannot be supported for internships.

Can I convert my Work Experience to an Internship?
Typically, the answer is no, unless you are completing Work Experience with an employer that CECS already has an established internship agreement with and the work that you’ll be completing as part of the internship is deemed suitable by the Course Convenor.
