Computational Mechanics

Computational Mechanics

Many years ago, engineers developed products by trial and error. In the case of most industries, particularly the automotive and aerospace sectors, this could be a very expensive exercise. Now, using computational mechanics we can virtually complete prototypes and testing. Rather than using a stamp press to produce an experimental car roof panel, for example, we can use fast computing facilities to discover how well the part can be formed and whether it will perform its task successfully and sustainably, without breaking apart.

With more than 20 years of work in this interdisciplinary field and direct access to Australia’s fastest supercomputer facility at ANU, our world-class academics and students are conducting cutting-edge research in computational mechanics. For instance, how can we improve medical implants and procedures to put them in the body? How well does an implant perform? These are now questions that do not require human volunteers to find answers.

We are working with automotive, aerospace and biomedical industry partners, including Boeing and Canberra Hospital, to develop modern engineering technologies that will be easy to manufacture, safe to use and have a long service life.
