Development of Control Software for a Portable Electroluminescence Measurement System for Photovoltaic Modules

Project duration6-12 months
Posted date28 January 2026

Project scope

  • This project continues the development of a portable electroluminescence (EL) measurement system for photovoltaic (PV) modules.
  • The project will build on a completed hardware prototype.
  • The focus will be on developing user-friendly control and image-processing software, with a possible experimental/lab-component.
  • Students will be expected to work on their own.
  • Both domestic and international students are welcome to apply.
  • The scope of the project can be tailored to suit short undergraduate (e.g. ENGN2706/ENGN3706), as well as Honours (ENGN4350) or Masters research projects (ENGN8602).

Project description

This project is a continuation of a previous student project that successfully developed the core hardware for a portable EL measurement system. The student will develop software to control the system and acquire EL images using a Raspberry Pi-based camera. This includes accessing RAW image data, implementing a lock-in style measurement approach to enhance signal quality. If time and interest permits, the student will be able to experimentally apply the system to a range of PV modules and lighting conditions to evaluate performance and limitations. A further optional extension, subject to time and funding, is the integration and validation of a higher-quality camera.

Information for applicants

The ideal candidate is a motivated student with an interest in software development at the interface of software and hardware.

Background or interest in programming or embedded systems desirable.

Background

EL imaging is a powerful, non-destructive technique for detecting defects and degradation in PV cells and modules.

Student takeaways

  • Gain experience in software development for experimental systems.
  • Work with Raspberry Pi-based hardware and camera systems.
  • Implement image acquisition and processing techniques.
  • Develop user-focused software for lab and field measurements.
  • Gain exposure to PV module diagnostics and experimental validation.
