AI technologies in nuclear applications
Project durationFlexible
Posted date23 February 2026
Project scope
- This project is a literature review focusing on cataloguing and classifying the types of artificial intelligence models being discussed in academic literature discussing nuclear applications. This work will underpin future studies of AI integration in nuclear systems and the potential safety implications of such activities.
- This will be a scoping review, since the topic may span different disciplinary literatures.
- This project has no specific expected start date. If a student is interested in this topic the supervisor will work with them to refine scope to work well for their needs.
- This is a desktop study and can be done either on campus or remotely.
- Suitable for a student project for ENGN2706, ENGN2707, ENGN3706, ENGN3712, ENGN4706, ENGN4712, ENGN4718
- Suitable for domestic students.
Project description
The project goals are to get a sense of how various AI approaches are being considered for those engaged in nuclear technology design work and how those are evolving as a function of time.
Deliverables
A written up literature review that will provide the basis for a future publication, depending on findings. If a publication results students will receive co-authorship.
Information for applicants
Essential skills and background
- Students should be self-motivated
- Able to show evidence of high performance in detail-oriented work (e.g. via GPA, porfolio, etc).
Desirable requirements
- Some experience conducting literature reviews.
- Some knowledge of nuclear technologies (e.g. via nuclear systems coursework or project work) or approaches typically classified as "artificial intelligence".
Student takeaways
- Students will learn how to craft and iterate on a research question appropriate for shaping a doable scoping review in the time available.
- Students will also learn about novel approaches for using AI in nuclear technologies.
