Project description
Perovskite solar cells have emerged as a promising next-generation technology due to their high efficiency, low-temperature processing, and compatibility with scalable manufacturing. When combined with silicon in tandem configurations, they offer a pathway to exceed 30% efficiency. However, challenges remain in long-term stability, large-area scalability, and cost-effective production. Addressing these challenges is essential to enable commercial deployment and maximise the impact of next-generation solar technologies.
This project aims to develop highly efficient, stable, and cost-effective next-generation solar cells based on perovskite and perovskite–silicon tandem technologies. By combining advanced materials engineering, interface optimisation, and scalable manufacturing processes, the research targets efficiencies exceeding 30% while maintaining long-term operational stability under real-world conditions.
A strong focus is placed on reducing production costs through low-cost deposition techniques and minimising the use of scarce or expensive materials. The project also emphasises scalable module fabrication to bridge the gap between laboratory-scale devices and commercial deployment. The expected outcomes will contribute to lowering the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) and strengthening Australia’s capability in advanced solar manufacturing.
Deliverables
- This project will deliver more efficient, stable, and affordable next-generation solar technologies, helping to reduce the cost of clean electricity.
- By enabling scalable manufacturing and strengthening domestic capability in advanced photovoltaics, it will support industry growth, enhance energy security, and contribute to national and global decarbonisation efforts.
