Quantum Cybernetics

Quantum Cybernetics

In 1948, when there was a fruitful cross-fertilisation of ideas related to control, communications, biology and computation, Norbert Wiener, one of the most eminent mathematicians of the 20th century, wrote: “We have decided to call the entire field of control and communication theory, whether in the machine or in the animal, by the name Cybernetics, which we form from the Greek (word for steersman)”.

Quantum cybernetics extends this notion to include quantum physics, forming a cornerstone of the emerging discipline of quantum engineering. Science and technology are rapidly developing at the nanoscale, where physical features are incredibly small. By exploiting the unique features of quantum mechanics, we can create new machines capable of outperforming today’s most advanced technology. Quantum technologies being developed around the world include quantum computers and communication systems, precision metrology, nanoscale electromechanical systems and quantum optical systems.

We conduct fundamental research, combining theory and experimentation, in the following areas: quantum control; quantum networks; quantum communications; quantum computation and processing systems; and quantum device engineering. We encourage students actively interested in the nexus between engineering, physics and mathematics to work with us on these next-generation challenges.
