Information

Information

Smart phones, ‘seeing’ robots, sensor networks, unmanned vehicles. Research and development in information engineering helps to make these enabling technologies possible. Information engineering research is concerned with extracting and analysing useful information from signals and systems, or synthesising signals and building complex and information-rich engineering systems. Fundamental theory spans across traditional areas such as electrical and electronics engineering, computer science, mathematics and physics.

Our research in information engineering encompasses Acoustics and Audio, Computer Vision, Communications, Networked Systems, Quantum Cybernetics, Robotics and Signal Processing. Ground-breaking discoveries within these fields underpin countless applications in telecommunications, defence, aerospace, intelligent transportation, energy networks, medical engineering, consumer electronics and national security. Devices and machines such as quantum computers are still nascent, but they promise to surpass today’s most advanced technology.

Information engineering at ANU dates back to 1981 when Professor Brian Anderson and the late Professor John Moore established the Department of Systems Engineering. Our research has evolved through different faculties within ANU and NICTA. We have trained PhD students and academics who have become leaders in industry, government agencies and academia. Former staff and students have even founded successful companies, including Seeing Machines (Dr Alex Zelinsky) and Reposit Power (Dr Lachlan Blackhall).
